As a mother of two daughters, I have experienced my share of parent teacher conferences. Some of these meetings were mandatory meetings set up by teachers and some were called at our request. I cannot stress enough the importance of parent teacher conferences. As my girls entered the public school system, I was a bit apprehensive about turning them over to these teachers who did not know my girls the way I do. What I didn’t realize until these meetings, was that these were true professionals who were not only able to zero in on my child’s strengths and weaknesses, but they had an innate ability to identify all the student’s abilities and see how they compliment each other in a group setting.
If you are having a PTA fundraiser or elementary school fundraiser you might use these conferences to poll the parents about their opinions on how to increase future results.
These conferences were invaluable because they let us see our child from a different point of view. Of course we always knew our kids were baby Einstein’s but their teachers were able to show us that they are able to excel at other things, such as good citizenship and cooperating with others. Things that at the time were just subjective forms of assessing them, but on later years, I believe it was the beginning of them being able to be socially adept as young adults in today’s world.
These parent/teacher conferences progressed through the years to identify areas of improvement. It became apparent that one daughter excelled in math and the other in math and science. These was a little confusing to me, since they have the same mother and father and were raised in almost identical circumstances. These parent/teachers conferences helped us realize that our girls are separate individuals and have their own distinct aptitudes.
We continued the parent/teacher conferences into their middle school years. This was a bit more difficult to meet with all of their teachers at the same time because for the most part their “off” period did not occur at the same time. But with the support of administration who understood the importance of parent teacher conferences, we were able to meet with them as a group.
The information that my husband and I gleaned from these conferences were invaluable. I encourage parents to meet on a regular basis with their child’s teacher. It will be some of the most important meetings you will ever attend.
